EXPONENTS, ROOTS, SQUARE ROOTS AND PERFECT SQUARES
(please note: we are concerned only with square roots at this point in time!)
PERFECT SQUARES SONG:

NOT PERFECT SQUARES: ESTIMATING ANSWERS
Example: the square root of 12 is likely somewhere between 3 and 4, because if you look at the multiplication chart, the nearest perfect squares are 9 and 16. And their square roots are 3 and 4. So the square root of 12 will be somewhere between that.
Checking it with a calculator: the answer is 3.464101615137754
So our estimation was correct!
AT HOME PRACTICE:
TRY THIS AT HOME!
- Using an example, define a perfect square.
- Using an example, explain the relationship between exponents and square roots.
- Chose any number.
- If you were to find the square root of that number, would it be a perfect square or not?
- If it is not, using your knowledge of perfect squares, guess-ti-mate what the answer might be.
- Check the answer with a calculator.
- Write the answer to the nearest hundredth.
- Repeat!
